Pets at Home dog food review
Pets
at Home have been selling their own brand of dog and cat food for some time
now, and we've tried it and like it a lot. The Pets at Home premium brand
(in the silver bag) complements their Wainwright's brand but has a much bigger
range, including cat food.
What we like about PAH is that they are very open and honest in their ingredient declaration - no 'vitamins and minerals' but listing what's in there, along with the fact that they use a natural antioxident.
It is also considerably cheaper than many well known brands that offer similar products at the premium end of the market. Why? you might ask...
It's mainly down to the number of people taking a cut of the retail price! Pats at Home buy their food from a manufacturer and sell it to you. Other companies have to buy the food, then distribute it via wholesalers and retailers, each of whom wants their 30-40% markup. Common sense therefore tells you that PAH should be able to offer a good deal!
In fact you can save a lot. At just over £30 for a 15kg sack of dog food this food compares well with natural, premium foods costing £42+ a bag. Tray foods offer less of a saving, but production costs on these are proportionally higher so there's not so much room for generosity here.
Our long term trial with PAH foods would indicate that you get good results with coat, skin and digestion - although as with all such foods it is important not to overfeed, so stick to the guidlines. The Pets at Home food is slightly higher in protein and oil than Burns, so there's less likelihood of an underweight dog or cat ... but we also have to be careful not to end up with an overweight one - feed at the lower end of the feeding range and then adjust upwards if you need to, rather than the other way around!!
So what's in Pets at Home food? Let's have a look at one recipe for example:
