Dog Food Reviews

If you are choosing a pet food, what criterion do you use?

Do you worry about what goes into the food? Whether the dog food contains 'real meat' or 'animal derivatives', natural or chemical preservatives and colours? What about price - do you go for the 'cheap and cheerful' or for something a little more expensive?

We've looked at all the main dog food brands out there to give a fair assessment of what type of food is offered and whether they look like good value for money, or worth considering if your pet has particular dietary needs.

This is a difficult task, because there are so many pet foods out there. The chosen dog and cat foods have not all been physically tested - the following criteria for selection, which we believe are appropriate for the vast majority of pet owners, have been used (if you don't agree then feel free to ignore our choices!)

Firstly, you need to be aware that you can't assume that a cheap to buy food is necessarily cheaper than a more expensive one to feed per day, as the feeding rate might well be more (300g instead of 250g ) so a bag doesn't last as long. Secondly, some dogs are intolerant of some ingredients, and you might need to buy one where you know what meat and what cereal were used, rather than vague terms such as 'derivatives' or 'by-products'

We also look at the best prices out there, and we believe you won't do much better than look at the big online pet stores such as Pets at Home and Pet Supermarket. There's two advantages to buying online - firstly there is price and special web-only deals, secondly the fact that you can have heavy pet food delivered direct to your door!
